Summer in the Vienna Alps – time to get outdoors

At 800 metres above sea level, summer begins more gently and lasts longer. While the heat shimmers in Vienna, here the air is filled with the scent of woods, meadows and freshly mown hay. All around the Feigenterrasse, panoramic walks, cable cars, cultural delights and hidden alpine huts await – our personal favourite destinations for a summer in Semmering, ranging from short strolls to full-day excursions.

Großer Otter – our local mountain

When guests ask us which hike they absolutely must do, we almost always recommend this one: the Großer Otter. At 1,358 metres, it is the highest of the three Otter peaks and offers a truly spectacular view over the Vienna Alps – to the west, the Rax, Schneeberg and Semmering stretch out in a row, whilst to the east the view extends far into the Bucklige Welt and all the way to the Vienna Basin. We do it ourselves time and again, preferably early in the morning when the mist still lies in the valleys.
The start is in Schlagl, just a short distance from the house: shortly after the village sign, turn right into Dorfstraße; after about 750 m, level with Schlagl 28, you’ll find a few parking spaces. From there, the route takes you via the Alpengasthof Kummerbauerstadl to the summit in around 2 hours (650 m elevation gain) – stopping for refreshments on the way back is simply part of the experience for us.

Mountain biking & cycling from the front door

Right on the doorstep of the Feigenterrasse, an extensive network of quiet forest tracks, shady woodland paths and marked cycle routes begins. From leisurely rides through meadows and mixed woodland to challenging climbs up to the heights of the Bucklige Welt, there’s something for every pace.

Three of our favourite tours:

Raach & Surroundings Leisurely Cycle – approx. 15 km · 250 m elevation gain A gentle route along forest tracks and small country lanes through Raach, past orchard meadows, wayside shrines and old farmhouses. Ideal for a relaxing morning or, on an e-bike, even for beginners.

Kummerbauerstadl Tour – approx. 25 km · 700 m elevation gain From your front door, follow shaded forest paths up to the Kummerbauerstadl (a wonderful place to stop for refreshments!). If you still have the energy, you can continue on foot to the Otter summit — leave your bike at the barn.

Großer Otter Tour – approx. 40 km · 1,100 m elevation gain For experienced cyclists: a scenic ridge ride towards the Feistritzsattel and back via varied trails. A full, fulfilling day on the bike.

And in the evening, the terrace awaits with cool drinks and a view over the mountains – the most beautiful destination of any tour.

Wexl Trails in St. Corona am Wechsel

One of Lower Austria’s most beautiful mountain biking destinations – and surprisingly family-friendly. At its heart are the 4.5 km Flow Trail with perfect bends and the 3.7 km Single Trail for those who prefer a more technical ride. For the little ones: the Mini Bike Park for children aged three and above. Bikes, helmets and protective gear can be hired on site, and the bike school offers courses for beginners and advanced riders. Refreshments right by the trail are included – perfect for a day on two wheels.

Corona Coaster – St. Corona summer toboggan run on the Wechsel

Our tip for families – and, let’s be honest, for adults who’ve never stopped being children either. At 870 metres long and reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h, the Corona Coaster is one of the fastest summer toboggan runs in the region. Children aged 3 and over may ride when accompanied by an adult; those aged 8 and over and at least 135 cm tall may ride alone. Single rides cost €8, multi-ride tickets are available at a discounted price, and children under 5 go free. Open daily from 9 am to 6 pm during the peak season. The best way to enjoy it all is to combine the activities: a morning session on the Wexl Trails, lunch at the Wexl Arena – and to finish off, a few quick rides on the Coaster.

Gondola lift & panoramic trail on the Hirschenkogel

If you’d like to get a gentle introduction to the region on your first day, we’d be happy to send you up here. The Zauberbergbahn cable car takes you up to around 1,340 metres in just a few minutes, and at the top, one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Vienna Alps unfolds – the Rax, Schneeberg and Schneealpe all in a single vista. The Panoramaweg trail is easily manageable even for inexperienced walkers, the summer toboggan run adds to the fun, and the rustic mountain station awaits to refresh you. Ideal for a relaxed half-day trip – a great experience even in light rain.
Our highlight: a sunset on the terrace at the top – when the peaks are bathed in orange and the lights of Semmering slowly come on below you.
